Job Title: IT Manager
Location: Washington, D.C.
Salary: $35,000, depending on experience, generous benefits

Description: The Federation of American Scientists has an immediate opening for an energetic, customer service oriented person to provide immediate software, hardware and network support for ongoing projects in the fields of strategic security, learning technologies, and building technologies.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to network maintenance, off-site and direct server administration, internal VOIP management, multiple website management, database design, web-based programming, direct computer hardware/software support, and IT asset upkeep/organization. FAS works to ensure that scientific advances are used to build a secure, environmentally sustainable future for all people by conducting research and advocacy on science and public policy issues in a casual and collegial office environment.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
• BS in IT or related field
• Ability and willingness to learn and support new applications
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with staff
• Priority focus on excellent customer service
• Capable of multitasking and prioritizing jobs
• Must be organized
• OS Systems: Windows, Mac (Linux a plus)
• Familiarity with networking principals, setup, and configuration
• Languages: HTML, JavaScript, PHP (Or ASP), SQL (C++ and Java a plus), (Experience with Flash is desired but not required)
• Software: MS Office, Adobe Suite Products, (WordPress and Content Management System experience is a plus)
• Hardware: General PC and Mac maintenance

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Answer staff questions in person and via phone on all company supported applications.
• Determine cause of computer problems and resolve (hardware, software, user access, etc.)
• Serve as a resource to the program managers and current projects
• Supervise interns
• Maintain a healthy and accessible inter- and intra-network with vendors in managing our off-site servers
• Provide web/database programming solutions for aspects of certain projects
• Maintain all IT assets including passwords, domain names, etc
• Provide on-the-job training to new department staff members

Internships

Title: Arms Sales Monitoring Project
Duration: Summer 2009
Deadline: Applications will be accepted until position is filled. 

Responsibilities: Assist with research on arms trafficking, terrorist acquisition and use of shoulder-fired missiles, the authorized international trade in small arms and light weapons, arms export policy, and conventional weapons threat mitigation efforts; help maintain and expand the ASMP website (http://fas.org/programs/ssp/asmp/index.html); and occasionally assist with administrative tasks, including requesting information, scanning documents, and obtaining resources from local libraries. 

Required Qualifications: Intern must have strong research and writing skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Must be able to work at least 30 hours per week. 

Preferred Qualifications: Technical knowledge of small arms and light weapons; familiarity with the US policy-making process; proficiency in one or more of the following: HTML, FLASH, MySQL, Javascript and Dreamweaver.

Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship

Title: Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship
Location: Washington, DC
Compensation: stipend of $2,200 per month and health insurance, plus travel expenses to Washington, DC.

The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship invites college graduates to apply for six to nine month fellowships in Washington, DC, focusing on arms control, peace, and international security issues.  Scoville Fellows serve with one of the twenty-five participating public-interest organizations.  They may undertake a variety of activities, including research, writing, and advocacy on a range of security issues, including nuclear, chemical andand peacekeeping, that support the goals of their host organization, and may attend coalition meetings, policy briefings and Congressional hearings.  biological weapons, non-proliferation, missile defense, weapons trade,

Benefits include a stipend, health insurance and travel to Washington, DC.
