Job Title: Biological Science and Biosecurity Program Director

Location: Washington, D.C.

Job Type: Full-time salaried position with generous benefits

Description: The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is seeking a passionate and established science policy professional to expand and redefine FAS’s Biological Science and Biosecurity program.   The director is required to secure funding, initiate high visibility and high impact projects on the responsible use of science and technology, public health, and/or biological weapons control, collaborate with FAS professionals on projects of mutual interest, and build and maintain beneficial community relationships.  


FAS professionals are expected to be highly motivated, committed to practical solutions and able to work independently.  They are expected to be able to analyze complex issues and summarize findings; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; have strong organizational skills; be capable of prioritizing work assignments in a heavy workload environment; and possess superior research and information technology skills.

Principal Duties:

- Works with the FAS president to redefine the biosecurity and biological sciences program;

- Identifies funding and outreach opportunities, and prepares proposal submissions;

- Analyses and addresses current biological and health security science policy needs, both domestically and internationally, and publishes findings.  

- Maintains an active network of research and collaborative partners in the biosecurity or relevant communities and attends seminars and events to network and stay current in the research areas

- interacts with the other project managers at FAS, the wider policy community, and the news media.

 

Specific Projects of Interest Include:

- Educating scientists, the public, and policy makers on the responsible use of life science and technology and proper balance of science and security.

- Educating scientists, law enforcement, the public and policy makers about the Biological Weapons Convention, dual use research of concern, and the appropriate actions needed to foster communication and mitigate the risks associated with an intentional or accidental release of a dangerous biological agent, or a naturally emerging disease.

- Addressing high-impact global public health and disaster preparedness issues, including but not limited to: infectious disease education and prevention measures; maternal health; public health infrastructure; water quality, supply and sanitation; food security; and agricultural disease awareness, prevention and best practices.

  • Providing scientific analysis of genetically modified organisms (including bacteria, animals, and plants) to educate policy makers and the public about benefits and level of risk associated with different GMOs. 
  • Provide scientific analysis of biofuels to educate policy makers and the public about the benefits and challenges of this alternative energy source. 


Education: Ph.D. in Biology, Heath Science, or related field preferred.  Master’s degree with appropriate skills and experience considered.  

Skills and Experience:Strong interpersonal and writing skills are required.  The candidate should have substantial scientific and policy publications, a proven ability to secure project funding, and successful management skills.  4+ years experience working on biosecurity, public health, or the responsible use of science and technology is required.
