Synthesis of e-mails received on 13 and 16 March 2001 from Dr Eduardo Jesús Greco, Deputy Executive President, National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality (SENASA), Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, Buenos Aires:


Report dates: 12, 13, 14 and 15 March 2001.


Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.


Date of initial detection of animal health incident: 12 March 2001.

Description of affected population: dairy cows and 1- to 2-year-old young bulls; in La Pampa outbreak some were more than 2 years old.

Laboratory where diagnosis was made: Central Laboratory of SENASA.


Diagnosis tests used: in serum: detection of antibodies using ELISA; in epithelium: direct typing by ELISA.


Causal agent: virus type A.


Source of agent / origin of infection: the origin of the infection is under investigation.


Control measures during reporting period: with regard to this situation, the SENASA has implemented all the preventive measures recommended by the OIE, as well as those contained in SENASA resolutions Nos. 479 and 779/99, and will continue to guarantee the hygiene of the products it currently certifies. Consequently, certification will be restricted for destinations where this epidemiological situation represents a constraint and for any product which may constitute a risk, as indicated in the OIE directives relating to this disease.
