Report date: 28 February 2001.
Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.
Date of initial detection of animal health incident: 21 February 2001.
Estimated date of first infection: 18 February 2001.

Diagnosis:
A. Laboratory where diagnosis was made: Virology Laboratory, State Veterinary Institute for Scientific Research and Control.
B. Diagnostic tests used: serological tests (complement fixation and immunodiffusion); inoculation into 1- to 2-day-old rabbits and 3- to 4-day-old mice.
C. Causal agent: virus type O194.
Epidemiology:
A. Source of agent / origin of infection: the sick animals were purchased in cattle markets.
B. Mode of spread: contact between healthy animals and sick animals.
Control measures:
- quarantine imposed in the three affected localities;
- restrictions on the import and export of commodities in Naryn and Issyk-Kul regions;
- vaccination in the infected zones and zones at risk.
