New outbreaks:

Laboratory where diagnosis was confirmed: the diagnosis was confirmed on 22 April 2001 by the Institute for Animal Health, Pirbright, Surrey (OIE World Reference Laboratory for foot and mouth disease).
Epidemiology:
A. Source of agent / origin of infection: local spread from outbreak No. NI/02 (County Tyrone).
B. Mode of spread: investigations ongoing.
Control measures: stamping-out policy; control programme covering the whole of Northern Ireland. No change to the 3-km and 10-km zones already in place around the outbreaks. Slaughter of all animals of susceptible species on associated premises and premises within 1 km of the infected premises.
