International Military Education and Training
Program Description | IMET Budget Figures
The Administration is requesting $55 million in FY 2001 for IMET.
IMET encourages mutually beneficial relations and increased understanding between the U.S. and foreign militaries in furtherance of the goals of international peace and security.
The approximately 2,000 courses available provide instruction in the areas of professional military education; military operations, with such subjects as tactics, strategy, and logistics; and technical training, such as aircraft maintenance. These courses are taught to over 9,000 foreign students at 150 military schools and installations.
Further, Expanded IMET (E-IMET) courses are designed to foster greater respect for and understanding of the principle of civilian control of the military and to improve military justice systems, in accordance with internationally recognized human rights.
