A ebrated Thanksgiving, and I hope you were able to get together with your friends or family.
Quality family time is not always easy to
arrange when you are geographically sepa-rated
from your loved ones and immediate
family, or it's your turn to pull mid- shift during
the holiday. Both sce-narios are distinct pos-sibilities
for many of us in the Air Intelligence Agency, with our worldwide respon-sibilities
and our worldwide deployments; both are realities in military life. Such challenges, particularly during this
time of year, frequently cause us to reevaluate what the Air Force means to ourselves and our families.
Over the last few years the challenges have grown. Life in the military has become busier, and it hits folks hardest
who do the kinds of jobs we do - flying as part of opera-tions, whether it be military, peacekeeping, or humanitar-ian;
deploying to the "hot spots" of the world for months at a time: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, Korea, Panama,
Honduras, Bosnia, and Croatia; and maintaining the reachback necessary to support our people on all those
different missions, in all those diverse locations. It's quite a tall order to fill, and yet we in AIA do a superb job around
the clock, 365 days a year. Nonetheless, all of this activity can put a strain on
anyone, whether you're single or married, active duty or family member. That's why the Air Force is working so
hard to make sure that in the rush of the mission, we don't lose sight of our people.
Our new Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Gen. Michael Ryan, made a point of that fact during his confirmation
hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. He recognized that maintaining a high quality of life for the
men and women of the Air Force is difficult at best under our heavy operational environment.
In order to help ease the strain, he stated, "We in the Air Force are reducing the number of inspections that we do
on our forces, the number of deployments that are training related that are not vital, and the number of competitions
we have, so that we can keep the force that we have trained, ready and fresh, for the next inevitable contingency."
The Chief clearly recognizes our high ops tempo and the impact on our people. He wrote further about quality of
life programs, saying, "The Air Force will continue to pur-sue an investment strategy that places quality of life in an
appropriate balance with readiness and modernization as our top priorities.
"Our people deserve to have a quality of life equal to

former commander of Electronic Se-curity Command and founder of the
program, presented the awards. Sensor Olympics is an 18- year- old,
enlisted skills competition used to identify, recognize and reward AIA's
best technicians. Nearly 700 technicians compete
against each other in 21 Air Force Specialty Codes.
Every unit conducts preliminary testing or alternate selection methods
to determine who will qualify for
Agency- level testing. The Agency-level tests are conducted in June and
July. The top three of each career field
are the finalists who attend Sensor Olympics week in San Antonio.
Twenty- one finalists walked away with gold medals at the banquet, while
the remaining 42 finalists earned ei-ther silver or bronze.
The 1997 gold, silver and bronze medalists are listed below by Air Force
Specialty Codes. Unit designators reflect unit of as-signment
at the time of Agency- level testing.
