The 544th Intelligence Group once again broke new ground. This time, the 544th Space Operations Support Element began intelligence support to the Space Battlelab.

The 544th has provided technical intelligence expertise and tools to the Space Warfare Center since November 1994 and expanded their support to the Space Battlelab this year.

We have continued to define the level of intelligence support that will be required by the battlelab when it begins full-up operations. To do this, we have established a strong working relationship with the six members of the battlelab stand-up team. Col. Jeffrey Wenzel, Space Battlelab commander, and his team are working on many issues such as system architecture, facilities buildout and personnel manning.

The staff of the 544th IG Command and Control Warfare section will submit initiatives to the Space Battlelab including:

  1. a mobile ASAT concept using technologies gleaned from an old Air Force missile program and one of the Navy's current missile interceptor programs;

  1. a concept to create an on-orbit, multi-layered intelligence data (i.e. ELINT, SAR, IR, hyperspectral imagery, etc.) collection, processing and dissemination system;

  1. a space-based target designator system (lasing targets from orbit for precision guided munitions); and

  1. the concept of stationing space vehicles in CONUS and using them for global engagements anywhere within 90 minutes of launch.

The 544th IG has proved invaluable in its support to the Space Warfare Center since it stood up an element at Falcon over two years ago. We will continue to build on this foundation of success in this promising new area of innovation and rapid application of ideas.
