Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii
The 692nd Intelligence Support Squadron, Hickam AFB, was recently presented the 1998 Commander’s Cup trophy by Col. Ann Testa, 15th Air Base Wing commander, during the base annual sports banquet.
Lt. Col. Gene Goff, 692nd ISS commander, and Capt. Bill Riggle, unit sports representative, received the trophy. The trophy was then presented to Col. Steven Capenos, 692nd Intelligence Group commander.
The Commander’s Cup is given annually to the squadron which accumulates the most points in the base intramural program. Points are based on a squadron’s win/loss record, unit participation, and sport representative attendance at monthly meetings.
There are three divisions on Hickam and placement in a division is based on the overall size of the unit. The 692nd fielded teams in 10 sports: bowling, volleyball, racquetball, soccer, men’s softball, Par-3 golf, over-30 basketball, men’s basketball, 18-hole golf, and flag football. Additionally, the squadron made the playoffs in racquetball and basketball, while winning the division for 18-hole golf.
According to Goff, the award is especially noteworthy for a number of reasons.
First, the 692nd participated in 10 of 13 sports offered by the base. This in itself was quite an accomplishment since the squadron maintains a heavy workload and TDY schedule with only 120 members. Plus, the unit was competitive in all sports, many times defeating larger organizations in both regular season and playoff competition.
Winning the Commander’s Cup was truly a team effort. Members participated during off-duty hours and cheered fellow members on the athletic fields. The 692nd is looking forward to continuing their intramural participation in 1999 and defending their title.
