Roberts was “a gifted cryptologic linguist with a strong sense of commitment to duty and an extraordinary level of personal courage.” He “was a leader in the establishment and development of the U.S. Air Force Security Service’s airborne operations in Europe and was widely recognized by his peers as the ‘best’ airborne mission supervisor, airborne operator and transcriber of his era.

During the Cold War, he was handpicked for two of the most prestigious and coveted assignments in the Defense Attache System, with the U.S. embassies in Warsaw and Moscow.
