Airborne Reconnaissance Annex for the DoD Joint Technical Architecture

The Airborne Reconnaissance (AR) Annex, Version 1 Draft, was delivered to the Joint Technical Architecture (JTA) Development Group (JTADG) on 30 May 1997. As defined under the DoD Architecture Coordination Council (ACC), the ARITA is a "pathfinder" addition to the JTA. The AR Annex will become a portion of the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) domain annex to the JTA. In addition to Airborne Reconnaissance, Automated Test Systems, and Modeling and Simulation technical architectures were the first domain-based architectures delivered for incorporation into Version 2.0 of the JTA.

The Airborne Reconnaissance Annex delivery to the JTADG consisted of a greatly modified version of the ARITA. The ARITA development team used a specific set of criteria to develop the annex. Standards already found in the JTA were eliminated. Sections of the ARITA with no defined standards were eliminated. A few standards were updated and some new standards were added. In the draft version delivered, 87 standards were listed that are uniquely required within the airborne reconnaissance domain.

As of the now, DARO will no longer update the ARITA. DARO's future technical architecture efforts will be directed towards the enhancement of the JTA Airborne Reconnaissance Annex. DARO has agreed to withdraw the ARITA as a published DARO document following the release of the new JTA Version 2 with the incorporated Airborne Reconnaissance Annex. Present plans call for DoD review of the JTA V2 draft starting on 18 July 1997, with publication the document scheduled for December of 1997.

Questions or comments regarding the AR Annex for the JTA may be directed to the ARITA Secretariat, c/o The MITRE Corporation, MS W967, 1820 Dolley Madison Blvd., McLean, VA 22102. The Secretariat may also be reached by sending e-mail to arita@mitre.org.
