The U.S. Total Army Personnel Command initiatives give soldiers more interaction in managing their careers.
The U.S. Total Army Personnel Command (PERSCOM) continues Operation Engage, a series of initiatives designed to increase soldiers' participation in career management.
Career managers in the Enlisted Personnel Management Directorate (EPMD) are using five communication initiatives to improve communication with soldiers. These initiatives include an interactive voice response telephone system (IVRS), expanded E-Mail capabilities, high speed fax machines, mail-grams and a pocket reference information card.
The cornerstone initiative is the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS). The IVRS is an automated voice response telephone system which provides soldiers with career information 24 hours a day.
Soldiers use their social security number to access the IVRS system. Soldiers select menu options which inform them if they are on assignment or scheduled to attend an Army school. The options also provide topical information on retention, recruiting, drill sergeant, special forces, ranger, compassionate reassignments, Married Army Couples Program, Exceptional Family Member Program and separations. To activate the IVRS system, dial 1-800-FYI- EPMD or DSN 221-3763.
Using E-mail also facilitates communication between soldiers and their career managers. Inquiries concerning the status of personnel actions, future schooling and assignments are examples of typical information exchanges which can be conducted 24 hours a day.
Soldiers can use fax machines to correspond with their career managers. Soldiers and personnel service centers can save time by faxing communications directly to the desired career branch within EPMD for processing.
Another new development to communicate with the individual soldier is the HQDA PERSGRAM. This mailgram supplements the chain of command in notifying soldiers of career or assignment information.
To help soldiers keep track of these new communication tools, EPMD distributed a wallet sized information card which lists a soldier's career manager's phone number, E-mail address, fax number, and IVRS instructions and phone number. Soldiers can pick up their pocket cards at their servicing personnel center.
