Monterey
Naval Security Group Detachment

Naval Security Group Detachment (NSGD) is the home for all Navy personnel assigned to the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Language Center, commonly called DLI. It includes about 30 permanent staff members at NSGD, about 20 permanent staff within DLI, and a 300-person student community. NSGD Monterey is subordinate to the Commander, Naval Security Group Command, Washington, DC. NSGD is a tenant activity at DLI.

Most Navy students are at DLI for Cryptologic Technitian Interpretive (CTI) "A" School. They come directly from recruit training. Otherwise, Sailors return for intermediate, advanced, or cross-training language classes, or for languages to meet special billet requirements. Navy students are primarily in Russian, Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish language courses. Most students receive their language assignment upon arrival. This depends on enlistment guarantees, Navy personnel requirements, class quotas, and the student's ability, background, and interest. All basic class students must take the Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) prior to assignment.

After DLI, CTI "A" School graduates continue their language training at Naval Technical Training Center Detachment, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas.
