1. DIVISION

a. Mission of a division-to destroy the will of the enemy to fight, and sieze, secure and control areas.

b. Brigade-Three maneuver brigades in a division. Separate brigades in some corps.

c. Battalion-Three to five battalions in a brigade.

d. Company-Three to five companies in a battalion.

2. MECHANIZED INFANTRY BATTALION

a. We will discuss battalions and companies of a Mechanized Infantry division. Look at your student outline and you will find the numbers and types of vehicles in each unit type.

 
b. Notice there are 4 maneuver companies, an HHC, and an AT company in a Mech BN.

3. ARMOR BATTALION

d. There are no significant differences between the HHCs in the armor or mech battalions.

e. The major weapon systems in heavy units consist of the M1A1 Abrams, M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, M3 Cavalry Fighting Vehicle, the TOW, and the 107mm/120mm Mortar.

4. Light Infantry Divisions, to include the Airborne and Air Assault Divisions.

a. There are three companies and an HHC in light infantry battalions. Airborne and Air Assault Divisions also have an AT company.

b. There are three platoons and a HQ platoon in a Light company.

c. There are three squads and a HQ element in a Light platoon.

d. The only significant difference between the Light HHCs is that the Light Infantry has an AT Platoon whereas the ABN/AASLT has an AT company.

e. The major weapon systems in Light units consist of the TOW, DRAGON, M60 MG, MK 19, and 81mm/60mm mortars.

5. FORCE MIX

a. Units always attached as complete units.

b. Light/Heavy- Heavy force attached to a light force.
(1)Only for short duration.
(2)Advantage-firepower and mobility.
(3)Disadvantage-logistics.

c. Heavy/Light- Light force attached to a heavy force.
(1)Normal association.
(2)Advantage-security.
(3)Disadvantage-light force keeping up with mech.

7. Mortars

NOTE: Let students try to define mission before showing mission slide.

a. Mission: To provide rapid response fire for the maneuver elements. The maneuver commander owns, his 'hip pocket fire support.'

b. Types: (1)60mm: Light Mortar
Range: 1000/3500M
Max Rate Fire: 30M/15S
Where Found: 2 per Lt Co.

(2)81mm: Medium Mortar
Range: 5750 M
Max Rate Fire: 30M/15S
Where Found: 4 per Lt Bn

(3)107mm: Heavy Mortar Range: 6840 M
Max Rate Fire: 20M/2S
Where Found: 6 per Hvy Bn

(4)120mm: replacing 107mm
Range: 7240 M
Max Rate Fire: 20M/2S
Where Found: 6 per Hvy Bn

c. Capabilities: Provide very timely fires, have autonomous ability (each track has FDC on board to compute firing data. Has a variety of munitions; HE, WP, HC, Illum. The fuzes available also provide additional variety of attack options; PD, VT, TI, CP, Delay.
(1) Very responsive.
(2) Wide variety of munitions.
(3) Effective against light targets in defilade.

SLIDE 33: MORTAR LIMITATIONS
d. Limitations:
(1) Easily detected due to large signature & high angle.
(2) Limited mobility.
(3) Limited range.
(4) Not effective against armored vehicles.

Mortar carrier is a modified M113 designed to carry the mortar, ammunition, and crew.

6. Scout Platoon - Are organic to each maneuver battalion - it is their job to find the enemy.

a. Scout Platoon Organization:

(1) 2 SCT SECTIONS, HQ Section in a Platoon.
