CAE 3: FIRE SUPPORT

SLIDE 1: FA MISSION

1. Field Artillery is called the "King of Battle". What is the mission of the Field Artillery? Fire Support covers many areas and the FSCOORD is responsible for coordinating all aspects of fire support and including FA, Mortars, Army Aviation, USAF, IEW, and Naval Gunfire if needed.

The mission of the Field Artillery is to suppress, neutralize, or destroy the enemy through cannon, rocket, and missile fires and to integrate all fires into combined arms operations.

SLIDE 2: FA DESIRED EFFECTS a. MISSIONS: Suppress, Neutralize, or Destroy the enemy.
(1) Suppress - Lasts as long target is under attack.
(2) Neutralize - Put out of action for a short time (temporarily).
(3) Destroy - Put out of action for a long time (or permanently).
SLIDE 3: STANDARD TACTICAL MISSIONS (SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS)

SLIDE 4: DIRECT SUPPORT (DS)

SLIDE 5: REINFORCING (R )

SLIDE 6: GENERAL SUPPORT REINFORCING (GSR)

SLIDE 7: GENERAL SUPPORT (GS)

b. SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS:

(1) Direct Support (DS) - Support one maneuver unit.
(2) Reinforcing (R ) - Provide support to another FA unit.
(3) General Support Reinforcing (GSR) - Provide support to the force as a whole, when available provide support to another FA unit.
(4) General Support (GS) - Provide support to the force as a whole.

SLIDE 8: COMPONENTS OF FS SYSTEM

SLIDE 9: FS=C3 + TARGET ACQUISITION + TARGET ATTACK

SLIDE 10: COMMAND, CONTROL, AND COORDINATION

SLIDE 11: FSCOORD FACILITIES

SLIDE 12: ARTILLERY SUPPORT BY ECHELON

SLIDE 13: FSO/RESPONSIBILITIES

c. COMPONENTS OF FS SYSTEM:
Includes Command & Control & Coordination (C3), Target Acquisition, and Target Attack.

(1) Command and Control - The planning and targeting process (Decide phase of the targeting process). FA Commander, FSCOORD, FSO/FIST/COLT.
(a) FSCOORD is the FA staff officer for the maneuver commander.
(b) Identifies who does what at what level and how the Fire Support elements are set up.
(c) The FSCOORD at the BN and CO level are also the FSO.

SLIDE 14: TARGET ACQUISITION

SLIDE 15: LOCATOR ASSETS

(2)Target Acquisition - The actual finding of the targets to be attacked (Detect phase of the targeting process). AN/TPQ-36 Radar, AN/TPQ- 37 Radar, Other.
SLIDE 16: TARGET ATTACK SYSTEMS

SLIDE 17: WEAPONS AND AMMO

(3) Target Attack - The actual attack of the target by whatever means was planned (Deliver phase of the targeting process). 105mm Howitzers, 155mm Howitzers, MLRS, ATACMS, Air Support, Army Aviation, Naval Gunfire, IEW. Most important capability is to mass fires quickly. Most important limitation is the large signature.
SLIDE 18: HEAVY DIVISION DIVARTY d. Know that it has 3 Battalions of 155mm SP (M109A3/6) DS to the Maneuver Brigades, 1 Battery of MLRS GS to the Division, and a Target Acquisition Battery (TAB).
SLIDE 19: FA BATTERY IN HEAVY DIVISION e. The FA Battery in a Heavy Division is organized into 2 platoons, each with 4 howitzer sections and a Fire Direction Center (FDC). 8 Guns total in the Battery. Normally operates in split battery configuration.

SLIDE 20: LIGHT, AIRBORNE, AND AIR ASSAULT DIVISION DIVARTYs f. The Light, Airborne, and Air Assault Divisions each have 3 Battalions of 105mm Towed Howitzers (M119A1)(18 in each battalion). The Air Assault Division also has a Battery (8 guns) of 155mm Towed Howitzers (M198)(soon to be replaced by the light gun).
SLIDE 21: FA BATTERY IN LIGHT DIVISION g. The FA Battery in a Light Division is organized with 6 howitzer sections and a Fire Direction Center (FDC). Not equipped for split battery operation but can easily be air transported forward for artillery raids or deep missions.
SLIDE 22: FIRE SUPPORT COORDINATION MEASURES h. FIRE SUPPORT COORDINATION MEASURES (FSCM) - Boundaries are natural FSCMs, can't fire across them without coordinating with the unit on the other side. Other measures are Permissive FSCMs and Restrictive FSCMs.
SLIDE 23: PERMISSIVE FIRE SUPPORT COORDINATION MEASURES

SLIDE 24: PERMISSIVE FSCMs GRAPHIC

i. PERMISSIVE FSCMs - Those measures that provide protection for the force while facilitating the rapid attack of targets.
(1) CFL - You may attack targets beyond this line with any surface to surface munitions without coordination.
(2) FSCL - You may attack targets beyond this line with all attack means without coordination.
(3) FFA - You may attack targets within this area with all attack means without coordination.

SLIDE 25: RESTRICTIVE FIRE SUPPORT COORDINATION MEASURES

SLIDE 26: RESTRICTIVE FSCMs GRAPHIC

j. RESTRICTIVE FSCMs- Those measures that facilitate the attack of targets but emphasize the protection of the force.
(1) RFL - Munitions may not be fired beyond this line without coordination.
(2) RFA - Certain munitions may not be fired into this area.
(3) NFA - No munitions may be fired into this area (used with scouts).
(4) ACA - 3 dimensional area where no munitions may be fired, protects air assets.
SLIDE 27: LEVELS OF FSCOORD/ FSO k. LEVELS OF FSCOORD/FSO MATRIX:
(1) Company - FIST or Company FSO is both the FSO and FSCOORD.
(2) Battalion - Battalion FSO is both the FSO and FSCOORD.
(3) Brigade - Brigade FSCOORD is the DS FA BN Commander, he assigns a representative to represent him on the Brigade staff, the Brigade FSO.
(4) Division - Division FSCOORD is the DIVARTY Commander, he assigns a representative to represent him on the Division staff, the Division FSO.
