FAS Intelligence Resource Program

The Pentagon

On its first day as an operational agency, DIA consisted of less than 25 people borrowed from the Services. It was also located in about 2,000 square feet of borrowed space in the Pentagon. However, activation of the Production Center on 1 January 1963, and the merging of several Service production elements necessitated occupying the "A" and "B" Building facilities at Arlington Hall Station, VA. An upgrade of the National Military Intelligence Center (NMIC) was authorized in 1971, and DIA completed modernization of the NMIC in 1976.(1)

In the 1980s the NMIC - including its Alert Center, Collection Coordination Facility, and intelligence task force areas - was upgraded, renovated, and collocated with the JCS National Military Command Center to permit fusion of operations and intelligence during crises at the national level. In 1989 a combined intelligence/operations facility, the Crisis Management Room, was designed and built adjacent to the NMIC Alert Center. A Counternarcotics Research Center and a Joint Tactical intelligence Center were also formed to better manage support to the counternarcotics and Latin American issues.
