Since 1976 DOE has been involved in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which consists of underground crude oil storage facilities. The Bayou Choctaw site is located on about 400 acres of land 12 miles southwest of Baton Rouge LA. More than 50 million barrels of crude oil are stored at this facility, which includes a raw water intake structure, brine ponds, wellpads, and high pressure pump pads
