  • Started the Threat Assessment section, with a primary focuse on weapons of mass destruction (30 July 1996)
  • Extremely massive update of Congressional Record materials on intelligence and related issues (30 July 1996)
  • Start of a major rehack of the whole dang site, which was startin to get all nasty and hard to maintain. We are trying for a somewhat cleaner look and feel, with stuff organized a bit better. It will take about a month or so to get all the internal links realigned, so please be patient if things are a bit confusing in the short run. (21 July 1996)

  • Mystery Aircraft - our analysis of reports of unacknowledged secret airplanes. (14 May 1996)
  • Added the entire text in HTML of Army Regulation AR 530-1 Operations Security (OPSEC). (13 May 1996)
  • Started construction of the IMINT Gallery -- an online archive of imagery intelligence from a variety of sources covering a wide range of points of interest. This resource will take about a month to finish construction, so you may want to check back every couple of weeks to see how things are progressing. If you are aware of any sources that we should include, please contact us. We are particularly interested in show-casing exemplary images from manufacturers of camera, processing and exploitation systems. (12 May 1996)
  • A major rehack of the Intelligence Industry Contractor Guide, which now consists of more user-friendly byte-size pieces that you might actually be able to download, rather than a single monster.file that would choke your modem. (10 May 1996)
  • Overhead the Intelligence Community - added a number of maps and floor space analyses, and broke some excessively massive pages into slightly more user friendly components. (4 May 1996)
  • Added some intelligence related Public Laws. (4 May 1996)
  • Added intelligence related Executive Orders. (3 May 1996)
  • Intelligence and Related Facilities Location Map -- updated to add about 50% more points of interest relative to the previous release [many hundred, too numerous to enumerate] as well as some pointers on how to actually access this content, which requires the DeLorme StreetAtlas 3.0 CDROM. (2 May 1996)
  • Information Warfare on WWW updated with about twice as many references as the previous release. (1 May 1996)
  • Department of Defense Directives -- a guide to intelligence and security related Directives and Instructions. About half of them are available on-line at our site. Some of this stuff is pretty dry reading, but close inspection will reveal a few gems, such as: DODD 5200.37 Centralized Management of Department of Defense Human Intelligence [18 December 1992] -- which is the charter for the Defense HUMINT Service that was in the news last year.   • Intelligence Agency and Contractor map -- Based on the DeLorme Street Atlas 3.0 this small file can be downloaded and overlaid on the DeLorme CDROM map of the United States [if you don't have the DeLorme CDROM, you are outta luck, but the thing is only $79, and if you have ever had any interest in maps, you gotta get this thing right now, 'cause it is quite amazing!!].     March 1996

  • Secrecy and Government Bulletin -- March 1996 edition INTELLIGENCE REFORM RACES TO A HALT Steve Aftergood reviews the recently released intelligence reform reports (19 March 1996).
  • Updated the URL-Minder Registration form so that update notices are specific to this page, rather than the general FAS What's New page. If you want to receive updates on Intelligence Reform, you need to re-register (14 March 1996).
  • IC21 -- The Intelligence Community in the 21st Century -- House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence 6 March 1996 proposals for intelligence community reform (13 March 1996).
  • Updated the NRO Model Homepage, adding budget information and a number of NRO Facility maps (12 March 1996).
  • Added intelligence community budget information, based on material released by the Aspin/Brown Commission (11 March 1996)
  • Completed the first round of Overhead the Intelligence Community, based on readily available imagery. There are a number of identified facilities that are not included, but it will take a while longer to lay hands on imagery of them (7 March 1996).
  • Added another dozen and a half or so company profiles to the Intelligence Industry Contractor Guide, bringing the total to 156 companies. Washington area locations of many of these companies can be seen in the Overhead the Intelligence Community section as well [though we still need to add identifying templates] (7 March 1996).
  • Overhead the Intelligence Community -- medium and high resolution [aerial] imagery of major intelligence agency and contractor facilities (4 March 1996).
  • Intelligence Agency Budget and Personnel -- a handy chart listing the budgets and personnel levels of US intelligence agencies (1 March 1996).

    February 1996

  • Making Intelligence Smarter: The Future of U.S. Intelligence -- February Report of an Independent Task Force Sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations (21 February 1996)
  • Added another dozen and a half or so company profiles to the Intelligence Industry Contractor Guide, bringing the total to about 140 [given the pace of merger and acquisition activity in this market, it is hard to be more precise in this count]. Also added many dozens of additional corporate operating locations, and corporate sponsors of the Joint Military Intelligence College. To facilitate finding these updates, they are all now keyed with a symbol. We still need some user feedback on how to bust up this excessively bandwidth intensive [~230k] file into something a bit more user friendly. (18 February 1996)
  • Complete transcript of the 19 January 1996 public hearing of the Commission on the Roles and Capabilities of the United States Intelligence Community. (13 February 1996 -- sorry for the delay!!)
