WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio, (AFPN) -- The U.S. Air Force's Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle No. 2 was destroyed when it crashed at approximately 10:14 a.m. PST March 29 on the test range at the Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

There were no injuries or property damage on the ground as a result of the mishap. The turbofan-powered aircraft had been flying approximately 20 minutes when the mishap occurred.

An investigation team has been formed to determine the exact cause of the mishap.

The aircraft is being developed by Teledyne-Ryan Aeronautical of San Diego for the U.S. Air Force to provide high-altitude, long-endurance battlefield reconnaissance imagery. When operational, Global Hawk can fly autonomously at altitudes higher than 60,00 feet and remain on station for more than 24 hours.
