                     STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY


National Security Advisor Samuel Berger announced today the appointment of
Jeffrey A. Hunker as Senior Director for Infrastructure Protection, Office
of Transnational Threats, effective June 3, 1999.

Dr. Hunker has been director of the Commerce Department?s Critical
Infrastructure Assurance Office (CIAO) since 1998.  From 1995 until his
appointment as Director, he was Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of
Commerce and, prior to that, from 1993 to 1995, was Senior Policy Advisor
to the Secretary of Commerce.  Earlier, Dr. Hunker was an investment banker
with Kidder, Peabody and Co. in New York, and a management consultant with
the Boston Consulting Group.

Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Pittsburgh, Dr. Hunker is a
graduate of Harvard College, Phi Beta Kappa, and Harvard Business School.
He is a member of the Photography Council of the Museum of Modern Art in
New York.  He and his wife Peggy live in Washington.
