ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT ANNOUNCES DETAILS

REGARDING COMMISSION ON FBI SECURITY PROCEDURES


WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft today announced the members of the special commission that will be chaired by Judge William Webster to review and make recommendations of the FBI's internal security procedures.

Members of the Commission are as follows:

  • William H. Webster

    A senior partner with the Washington law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, Webster has served as the director of both the CIA and FBI. Previously, he served as a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, a U.S. District Court Judge and as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. Recently, he served as Chairman of the Commission on the Advancement of Federal Law Enforcement. He has also been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

  • Clifford L. Alexander, Jr.

    Alexander has worked under four consecutive presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Carter. He has served as Foreign Affairs Officer for the National Security Council, assistant district attorney for New York County, Secretary of the Army and Chairman of the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He also served as Special Consultant to President Johnson on civil rights and voting issues.

  • Griffin B. Bell

    Bell served as the 72nd Attorney General of the United States from 1977-1979. Prior to that, he was appointed by President Kennedy to serve as a United States Circuit Judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. From 1985-1987, he served on the Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on South Africa. He was also appointed Vice Chairman of President Bush's Commission on Federal Ethics Law Reform.

  • William S. Cohen

    Cohen was appointed by President Clinton in 1997 as Secretary of Defense. He also served in both the House and Senate, representing Maine beginning in 1972. During his tenure, he served on the House Judiciary Committee and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He also acted as Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management. He is an expert on government ethics issues and defense and intelligence issues.

  • Robert B. Fiske, Jr.

    Fiske was Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1957-1961, and United States Attorney for the four years that followed. During that time, he successfully prosecuted a number of prominent cases and served as Chairman of the Attorney General's Advisory Committee of United States Attorneys. He also was also appointed by New York State Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye to serve as Chairman of a Judicial Commission on Drugs and the Courts.

  • Thomas S. Foley

    Foley served most recently as Ambassador to Japan under President Clinton. He also spent 30 years representing Washington State in the House of Representatives, ending his time there as Speaker. While serving as Majority Leader in the House, Foley served on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and Chairman of the House Geneva Arms Talks Observer Team. His service also includes time as Chairman of President Clinton's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.

  • Carla A. Hills

    Hills served as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Ford Administration. From 1974-1975 she was Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice Civil Division. From 1989-1993, she served President Bush as United States Trade Representative. In addition, she served as Vice-Chairman of President Reagan's Commission on Housing and on the president's Commission on Defense Management.
