FAS Project on Intelligence Reform

Area 51 - Groom Lake, NV

02 April 2000 - IKONOS 1-meter Imagery

Hangar 18

The largest hangar on the base, Hangar 18 takes up approximately 51,366 square feet capable of accomodating aircraft with a wingspan of 235 feet, and a length of 190 feet. The height of Hangar 18 is estimated to be eight stories. Reports claim this high bay building is used to mate a secret hypersonic aircraft to its launch vehicle.

Hangar 17 & A-12 Hangars

At the South end of the facility there are eight 8,700 square foot hangars measuring 77 feet by 116 feet. These hangars were built to support the A-12 program. There is a large composite 29,000 square foot hangar 140 x 217. Located at the south end of the the base, Hangar 17 provides up to 28,900 square feet of floor space, with a 135 foot-wide opening, and and depth of up to 217 feet making this the longest hangar at Groom Lake. Hangar 17 also contains a security vault.

Toxic Waste Burn Pits

In 1994 several former contract employees who worked at Groom Lake, filed a lawsuit claiming that toxic waste was routinely burned in open are burial trenches and that they suffered health-related illness including cancer. Ikonos imagery tends to supports the conclusion that the EPA did in fact conduct an environmental cleanup and remediation. Scrape and fill marks in the area of the waste trenches is consistent with those seen in other Superfund clean-up remediation.
