A. DESCRIPTION: THE AIRBORNE RELAY FACILITY (ARF):
AN/ARW-83(V)5 IS THE AIRBORNE MISSION EQUIPMENT OF THE AN/USD-9A
IMPROVED GUARDRAIL V (IGRV) SYSTEM. IT CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING
EQUIPMENT INSTALLED IN AN RC-12D AIRCRAFT(Z04549):
INTERCEPT RECEIVERS
DIRECTION FINDING EQUIPMENT
RF PROCESSOR
DF RECEIVER
AIRBORNE PORTION OF AN AUTOMATIC SIGNAL CLASSIFICATION AND
RECOGNITION SYSTEM (SCAR).
EQUIPMENT FOR ACHIEVING A MICROWAVE LINK TO THE IGRV GROUND
PROCESSING FACILITY (AN/TSQ-105(V)4).
B. CAPABILITY: THE AN/ARW-83(V)5 PROVIDES A REMOTELY
CONTROLLED INTERCEPT/DIRECTION FINDING SUBSYSTEM WHICH FEEDS DATA VIA
MICROWAVE LINK (IDL) (BOIP M021AH) TO THE GROUND BASED IGRV
SURVEILLANCE INFORMATION PROCESSING FACILITY (IPF), AN/TSQ-105(V)4
(M021AB, M021AC, M021AF, M021AG). IT ALSO PROVIDES RELAY CAPABILITY
FOR THE AN/TSC-116 IMPROVED TACTICAL COMMANDERS TERMINAL TO THE IPF.
C. EMPLOYMENT: THIS SYSTEM IS EMPLOYED ONLY TO THE MILITARY
INTELLIGENCE BRIGADE, AERIAL EXPLOITATION BATTALION, CORPS.

THE RC-12D AIRCRAFT (Z04549).
F. TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENT: THIS SYSTEM IS INSTALLED IN
AN RC-12D AIRCRAFT (Z04549).

H. SPECIAL NOTES:
1. AS OF JUNE 1993, THE HISTORY OF THE GUARDRAIL FAMILY
IS AS FOLLOWS:
THE BASE ITEM IN ALL AERIAL EXPLOITATION BATTALIONS IS
GUARDRAIL V (GRV).
GRV WAS FIELDED TO USAREUR AND 15TH MI BN, FT HOOD. IT
WAS REPLACED BY IGRV, AN/USD-9A, AT BOTH LOCATIONS. THE IGRV IN
USAREUR WAS THEN REPLACED BY THE GUARDRAIL COMMON SENSOR SYSTEM 4
(GRCS-4), WHILE THE IGRV IN FT HOOD IS SCHEDULED TO BE REPLACED BY
THE GUARDRAIL COMMON SENSOR SYSTEM 2 (GRCS-2) IN 1997.
2. IGRV CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING LINS:
Z04118 (M021AA), Z15849 (M021AB), Z15917 (M021AC),
Z28126 (M021MA), Z40903 (M021MB), Z41406 (M021MC),
Z50693 (M021AD), Z76231 (M021AE), Z77097 (M021AF),
Z77165 (M021AG), Z35208 (M021AH).
3. BOING IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR PUBLICATION IN AR 71-13.
4. PERSONNEL CHANGES GENERATED BY THE IMPROVED GUARDRAIL V
BOIPS (I.E. M021AB, M021AC, M021AF, M021MA...) WERE AFFECTED USING
THIS BOIP M021AA. OTHER PERSONNEL CHANGES WERE AS FOLLOWS:
A. MOS 155D, U21 PILOT (A30591, GRV SYSTEM) TO 155E, RC-12
PILOT FOR Z04549.
B. MOS 15C00 IN AFFILIATION WITH ASI'S F2 (FOR RU-21) WAS
CHANGED TO F3 (FOR RC-12). THESE CHANGES OCCURED IN THE
HEADQUARTERS, HEADQUARTERS AND SERVICE COMPANY AND THE ELECTRONIC
WARFARE COMPANY.
5. THE 33R, AERIAL SENSOR REPAIRER, REQUIREMENTS AS DEPICTED IN
TOE 34418C200 AND THIS BOIP ARE DIRECTLY COMMENSURATE WITH PERSONNEL
AUTHORIZATIONS CURRENTLY DOCUMENTED IN IGRV UNITS.
6. THE RC-12D AIRCRAFT IN WHICH THIS AIRBORNE RELAY FACILITY
(ARF) IS MOUNTED, IS CARRIED AS ASIOE ON THE FEEDER DATA/QQPRI.
HOWEVER, A 1983 MESSAGE STATED THAT THE RC-12D AIRCRAFT (Z04549)
WOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE TOE, BUT WOULD NOT HAVE ITS OWN BOIP.
THEREFORE, THE AIRCRAFT IS ADDED TO THE TOE (34418L200 AND 34418L400)
WITH THIS BOIP EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A DEVELOPMENTAL LIN.
