AN/MYQ-7 Intelligence Analysis System (IAS)

The Intelligence Analysis System (IAS) automates the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) intelligence activities of direction, collection, processing, production and dissemination of critical tactical intelligence from embedded databases and multiple sources. Inter-operability with other systems such as Navy Tactical Command System-Afloat, Joint Deployable Intelligence Support System (JDISS) and all Marine Air Ground Intelligence systems is maintained to ensure a common intelligence picture of the battlefield. The IAS configuration also provides administrative support through the use of word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, and data base management programs.

The IAS has the following functions: Rapid storage and retrieval all-source; intelligence data; dissemination; internal routing; alphanumeric/graphic display of sorted information; management, tasking, and coordination of organic, theater, and national intelligence collection assets; and work processing.

Three different configurations suport echelons of command. MEF IAS (vehicular mounted) supports MEFs. IAS Suites (portable multi-workstations in a LAN/WAN) support Divisions, Wings, and MEUs. A single IAS workstation supports Battallion/Squadron. IAS Suites are currently fielded; MEF IAS is under development; IAS workstations are currently unfunded.

OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION

The IAS configuration automates the MAGTF intelligence activities of direction, collection, processing, production and dissemination of critical tactical intelligence from embedded databases and multiple sources.

Interoperability with other systems such as Navy Tactical Command System-Afloat, Joint Deployable Intelligence Support System and all Marine Air Ground Intelligence Systems is maintained to ensure a common tactical intelligence picture of the battlefield.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The MEF IAS consists of a mobile, shelterized, system that will support the MEF command element. Comprised primarily of commercial off-the-shelf and Government off-the-shelf, nondevelopmental item components, the MEF IAS consists of two high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles (heavy variant), each with a shelter installed. System equipment will include Marine Common Hardware Suite computer workstations, peripherals, and communications interface equipment. The MEF IAS will use MAGTF C4I Baseline software developed to be compliant with the Joint Staff's Global Command and Control System Common Operating Environment.

The Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) C4I Software Baseline (MSBL) was conceived to satisfy the specific needs of Marine Corps C4ISR systems by providing engineered, integrated and tested software in a common operating environment not readily available from DOD, the other services or the private sector. Performance requirements will include access from Secret Genser to SCI information; facilities must have access to NIPRNET, SIPRNET, and JWICS, and personnel shall posses the appropriate clearance. The MSBL serves as an engineering solution to the Marine Corps' strategy for achieving the Command and Control (C2) goals defined by the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) and by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). It manages software that utilizes chosen application segments built on and integrated with the Defense Information infrastructure (DII) Common Operating Environment (COE). The MSBL currently provides functionality for Maneuver Control C2 (Tactical Combat Operations (TCO)) and Intelligence C2 (Intelligence Analysis System (IAS)).

The Joint Intelligence Fusion System (JIFS) uses Object Request Broker (ORB) technology within the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) framework. CORBA is a standard that enables different software applications at dispersed locations to interact without prior knowledge of their network location. ORB serves as an invisible intermediary which translates between applications and transports information across the network. Using this software infrastructure, the project demonstrates joint database level interoperability between the Army’s All Source Analysis System-Remote Workstation (ASAS-RWS), the Air Force’s Combat Information System (CIS) and the Marine Corps’ Intelligence Analysis System (IAS). JIFS is an extension of all of these intelligence processing platforms and is designed to be highly scaleable to not only other intelligence systems but also to any C2 system.

CONCEPT OF EMPLOYMENT

The IAS architecture is scalable from a single, stand alone, portable workstation at the battalion/squadron level; to a four station, on line, moveable, intermediate suite at the MEU level; to a mobile mounted multi-station real time, service-wide intelligence communications link at the MEF level. The IAS will deploy either as a MEF IAS, in IAS suites, or as single IAS workstations. The MEF IAS serves as the hub of the Marine Air-Ground Intelligence System (MAGIS). It provides intelligence functionality to the echelon-tailored, MAGTF all-source intelligence fusion centers and is compatible with the DII COE. MEF IAS is a shelterized, mobile system with multiple analyst workstations in a client-server LAN configuration. IAS suites, for intermediate commands, are configured in either a two or a four workstation LAN. Single IAS workstations are for battalion and squadron-sized units.

PROGRAM PERSPECTIVE

IAS suite IOC was completed in the 1st Quarter FY97 with FOC scheduled for 2nd Quarter FY98. MEF IAS underwent operational testing in 1996, with IOC in 1998 and FOC in 1999. IAS workstations started their Research and Development (R&D) phase in FY97 with IOC in FY98.
