Imagery Management and Communications Testbed System [IMACTS] is a scalable, distributed, imagery archive and dissemination system supporting an all-soft-copy image exploitation environment. It ingests and stores up to 5 terabytes imagery (scalable to petabytes) from multiple sensors, providing highly interactive access to image pixel data and metadata. IMACTS finds images by using powerful query and browse tools which support rapid access to archive imagery and metadata. It interacts rapidly with images on demand and accesses imagery data using regions of interest pixel - management caching strategies to minimize delays.
The distributed architecture supports both local and remote clients Interactive Services. Interfaces to external systems include electronic light tables (e.g., MATRIX, ELT 7000, OASIS), NITF import and export capabilities and Collateral databases (e.g., NPDS). The system consists of a Hierarchal Storage System which stores and retrieves all image data and ingests new imagery data. Variable data granularity is designed to minimize delays in accessing archive data such as image metadata, image tiles and pyramids, and image files.
IMACTS supports national and tactical users. It provides integrated, highly interactive query, browse, and view tools, and supports the delivery of pixel data from server to client in order to minimize delays when viewing images to the national users. For the tactical user, IMACTS continuously updates its database for interactive query and browse, supports both the national and tactical imagery sources, and provides a rapid delivery of imagery from national archive via satellite. Tactical users can request full-frame imagery or user-defined image subregions. The remote user has access to the hierarchical storage system and the remote "tactical" server-client. The hierarchical storage system sends image database, browse data updates, and provides support to the services when requested for full images or sub-images centered on areas of interest such as targets. The remote tactical server-client stores all metadata and browse data in a workstation. The tactical user has immediate access to all query, browse data, and send requests to national IMACTS for new images or subimages.
