SECRETARIAT FOR INFORMATION

1999 - Year of Generalised Popular Resistance

PRESS RELEASE

The Secretariat for Information categorically contradicts the Lusa News Agency report, dispatched on 6th February 1999, apparently from Kuito. It stated that fighting was taking place since Wednesday 3rd February 1999, in the areas surrounding Andulo. There is not fighting in the area.

The Secretariat for Information, deplores this flagrant absence of professionalism and has established that Lusa in Angola is being ill served by people from the school of misinformation.

The true facts are different, the Generalised Popular Resistance are repelling every attempt made by FAPLA/FAA to attack the areas under UNITA jurisdiction. These are, militarily, very well protected.

It would be ideal if Lusa instead, helped to inform in relation to UNITA since, at the time being and until otherwise stated, there is no current relationship between UNITA and the Government authorities in Portugal. We wouldn't like to see Lusa being politically submissive to the interests of the Portuguese Government.

Therefore, we ask Lusa not to close this last remaining window, which serves for contact with a Portuguese institution. We believe Lusa can place itself in the service of truth.
