Gareyev reported that during 2001 "12 major projects and more than 150 other scientific research jobs were performed on the basis of assignments from the Security Council, the Federation Council, the State Duma, the government, the Ministry of Defense, and other ministries and departments of the AVN [Academy of Military Sciences].   About 470 articles were published in the mass media.  . . . the closest and most productive cooperation was with Krasnaya Zvezda and the journals VoyennayaMyslVoyenno-IstoricheskiyZhurnal, and Nezavisimoye Voyennoye Obozreniye.

    "Academy members took an active part in the parliamentary hearings and scientific conferences on questions of defense security.   At the scientific council of the RF Security Council, scientists presented reports on modifying RF state policy in the area of military development, the role of nuclear weapons in ensuring national security, formulation of a single system of underlying data for development of weapons, and measures to develop the country's scientific potential and raise the role of political-diplomatic, economic, information, and other nonmilitary factors and means to bolster the country's defense.

    "Members of the Academy presented reports to the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the RF on ways to improve management of the Armed Forces in local wars and armed conflicts, on further development of forms and methods for training the RF Armed Forces with consideration of the prospects of development of military affairs, and on improvement of the system for manning the army.   Moreover, the AVN took part in the military history conference at the General Staff devoted to the 60th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War [World War II].
