General

When operating in a crisis, targeting is one of the primary areas where intelligence and operations intersect. Intelligence plays a vital role by providing targeting data directly affecting the conduct of military operations. Joint targeting is a systematic, analytical process that matches a commander's objectives and guidance with inputs from operations and intelligence to identify enemy units, installations, or facilities as potential targets.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining a targets program responsive to EAC missions and priorities. This program includes development and maintenance of target data bases and target materials, production of installation intelligence documents/products, and preparation of special installation listings or documents.
  • Assisting in mission planning and providing the post-mission BDA via message traffic. The EAC components and inytelligence staff will provide input to the EAC BDA assessment. The intelligence staff will maintain the data base, exploit national intelligence for BDA purposes, and forward the reports. The EAC J2 Operations Division will determine the probable remaining operational effectiveness of the struck facility. The final judgment(s) on BDA will be passed to the Operations  Assessment Cell.
  • Planning and coordinating targeting aspects of Operations Plans (OPLANs), Contingency Plans (CONPLANs), and special projects.
  • Generating intelligence collection requirements, as required.
  • Providing MC&G support to EAC operations. The EAC J2 must establish MC&G requirements and coordinate acquisition of MC&G products necessary to support operations.
  • Acquiring and maintaining appropriate imagery-derived products.
