NOTES:
1939: 6 infantry divisions active, 3 only partially organized; 1st Cavalry Division active, 2nd Cavalry partially organized but not activated.
1942: 2nd Cavalry Division inactivated.
1943: 2nd Cavalry Division activated. 1st Cavalry Division switched to infantry TO&E.
1944: 2nd Cavalry Division inactivated.
1965: 1st Cavalry Division switches from infantry to air assault TO&E.
1969: 101st Airborne Division switched to airmobile (air assault) TO&E in late 1968.
1971: 4th Armored Division inactivated.
1972-73: 1st Cavalry Division organized to test TRICAP concept. Switched from air assault TO&E.
1974: 1st Cavalry Division switched to armor TO&E.
1985-86: Light Infantry Divisions (LID) organized. 7th ID converted in FY 1985; 10th Mountain Division (Light) activated in February 1985; 25th ID converted in FY 1986; 6th LID activated in March 1986.
1991: 2nd Armored Division was reduced to zero strength (but not yet inactivated) on 15 September 1991, and removed from the force structure. 9th MTZ Division was reduced to zero strength and all brigades but one were inactivated. The remaining brigade became the 199th Infantry Brigade.
1992: The 8th Infantry Division inactivated 17 January 1992. The 3rd Armored Division was reduced to zero strength (but not inactivated) on 15 February 1992 and removed from the force structure.
1994: The 6th and 7th Infantry Divisions were inactivated.
