AS-41 Submarine Tender Departments

LEGAL

Legal Department is responsible for processing command military justice matters., NJP, administrative discharge processing and investigations, along with general legal assistance. Master-at-Arms are responsible for maintaining good order and discipline. Also included in this department are urinalysis coordinators who are responsible for administering the urinalysis program.


MEDICAL

Medical Department is responsible for complete medical care of the ship's crew and crews of all Submarine Squadron units. Three medical officers, one Radiation Health Officer, two independent Duty Corpsman and 18 hospital corpsman provide a full range of health care services including lab, x-ray, pharmacy, preventative medicine, emergency, and outpatient treatment.

SAFETY

Safety Department is responsible for overall administration of the command NAVOSH program. Some of Safety's services include asbestos identification, respiratory protection training, noise surveys, workplace hazard evaluations, distribution of training information, safety hazard abatement, hazardous materials coordination, mishap reporting and investigation.

SUPPLY

Supply Department provides complete warehousing distribution, food, banking, accounting, retail, postal and hotel services to the ship and tended units. Supply operates four galleys, two barber shops, two ship's stores, multiple washers, dryers and presses, 45 storerooms including freezers and chill boxes, and more.

COMMUNICATIONS

Communications Department is responsible for processing all incoming and outgoing message traffic for the ship, and is capable of generating broadcasts for submarines operating in area of responsibility. Additional responsibilities include safe, reliable and secure maintenance of the ship's communication and navigation equipment, and administration of cryptographic keying material.

DECK

Deck Department's responsibilities include mooring both the ship and submarines, helicopter operations, preservation of the ship's exterior, operation of two 10,000-pound capacity travel cranes, one 30-ton capacity centerline crane, utility boats, officer moter boats and motor whale boats.


DENTAL

Dental Department provides examinations, general dentistry, oral surgery, and limited repair fabrication of dental prostheses for personnel of the ship and tended submarines.

ENGINEERING

Engineering Department is responsible for the air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, steam supply, the engine room and machinery therein, oil stowage tanks, a testing laboratory, fuel tanks, piping, electrical generators and equipment. Other responsibilities include structural maintenance, care and maintenance of repair lockers and ship's damage control records, fittings, equipment and markings. This department also provides engineering services to submarines.


REPAIR

Repair Department is responsible for various repairs required on both the ship and submarines. Its shops and some of its services include machinery repair, electronic and electrical repair, hull repair, radiological control, diving and rescue, carpentry, welding, photography and much more.


ADMINISTRATION

Administration Department is responsible for administration and custody of service records. This department is also responsible for accountability of ship's correspondence and directives. Admin assists the CO and XO with the command's public affairs, career counseling, and drug and alcohol abuse prevention programs. The Administrative Department also provides Sailors with complete personnel services.


CHAPLAIN

The Chaplain Department is responsible for counseling and assisting crewmembers, their dependents and families. Religious services and programs offered are designed to enrich spiritual and moral welfare as well as the total quality of life on the ship.

OPERATIONS/NAVIGATION

Operations/Navigation Department is responsible for preparation of operation plans, training, intelligence, and atmospheric data collection and navigation while underway.

WEAPONS

Weapons Department receives, inspects, maintains and and transfers torpedoes, missiles, ammunition and pyrotechnics. This department also repairs submarine fire control systems and provides small arms training for all submarine personnel in the Submarine Squadron.
