To maximize their benefits, conformal fluidic nozzles must be married to a variable cycle engine (VCE). The chart (taken from the VTIPS program) shows that a fully fixed nozzle behind a fixed cycle engine (FCE) reduced LCC 2.3%, but increased takeoff gross weight (TOGW) 0.3%. The same nozzle, when placed behind a VCE, provided a 2.5% LCC savings, and a 3.8% reduction in TOGW.
Fully fixed nozzles provide more than a 50% reduction in nozzle weight, a 70% reduction in overall parts count, and a 50% reduction in LCC when compared to the baseline F-22 nozzle system.
