Title: Fire Direction System (FDS)
Dialogue: The FDS (AN/GYK-37) provides tactical fire direction and digital command and control capability to the MLRS platoon, battery and battalion. It is authorized a companion printer.
It uses the exact same hardware and software at all levels. Initialization procedures determine at which level the unit functions. FDS does not compute technical solutions to firing, only tactical solutions. Battalion uses the FDS to select the platoon to fire based on a platoon center ballistic trajectory computation for range. They then pass the mission to the battery who uses FDS to assign a launcher. The battery can reassign the mission to any launcher/platoon. The platoon FDS monitors the mission and if needed can relay the mission to the launcher.
