Dialogue: The M270A1 will provide the commander and crew with improved responsiveness and survivability by incorporating an improved positioning determining system with GPS for improved launcher position accuracy. Additionally, an improved launcher mechanical system will reduce elevation and traverse time by 85%. The fielding plan for the M270A1 is scheduled to begin in FY 00. Because the ATACMS Block IA can only be fired from the M270A1, an improved position determining system (IPDS) equipped launcher will be introduced in the second quarter FY 98. The purpose is to cover the “Capabilities gap” between the M270 and M270A1, providing an interim firing platform for the ATACMS Block IA. Launchers will be fielded to 6-37FA in Korea and 2-18FA in III C/A, here on Ft. Sill.
