Title: Safety Responsibilities
Range Safety Officer: The installation range safety officer constructs the SDZ for established live fire areas. He provides the officer in charge (OIC) with the diagram, special instructions, and any locally required documentation.
Commanders: The MLRS battalion commander/DIVARTY commander and MLRS battery commander are responsible for selecting and training all personnel tasked with specific safety responsibilities and for certifying that they are qualified to perform those duties.
Officer in Charge (OIC): The OIC is normally the battery commander. He is responsible for ensuring that all rounds are safely fired toward the designated impact area. He ensures that all applicable safety regulations and procedures are followed.
Operations Officer/Platoon Leader: The operations officer and platoon leader are responsible to the OIC for safety in calibrating, start up data input, and updating the launcher(s) to fire. They ensure that data used for firing is accurate, properly transmitted and received by the launcher(s).
Section Chief: The launcher section chief is responsible for the operation of his crew from the reload point through rocket launch(s). He ensures that all procedures in the launcher are conducted in accordance with applicable technical manuals and that all reports and checks are verified in accordance with the procedures outlined in FM 6-60. Specific duties of the section chief are contained in subsequent paragraphs.
