TARGET ACQUISITION - Summary
The ability to "see" at operational depths has not kept pace with programmed capabilities to shoot deep. Target Acquisition remains one of the most difficult challenges facing fire support.
- The current Firefinder radars are reaching the end of their service life and effectiveness. We must leverage joint programs to upgrade the current radars and to determine the requirements for a more survivable and longer range radar that processes data faster and requires less manpower.
- A Lightweight Laser Designator Range (LLDR) finder is required for light forces and could serve as a replacement for the GVLLD. The GVLLD's inability to laze on the move and lengthy set-up and tear-down times makes it obsolete for future operations.
- We still do not have an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) capability at Div/Corps levels. We must work collectively to determine requirements and reestablish funding for the program.
- Funding for the Profiler program is essential if we are to improve the quality of met data which in turn improves accuracy. The technology for this program exists to day.
- When new location and navigation aids (GPS, GLPS and MAPS Hybrid) are integrated into our weapon systems, the requirement for PADs is cut by 50%. This would reduce costs for manpower (82C surveyors) and related support functions. The current integration program will not be completed until 05 under current plans.
