Simulations are powerful tools with myriad of high-payoff applications. Simulations will be used to improve each of the four pillars of military capability readiness, modernization, force structure, and sustainability. Simulations are a cost effective means of enhancing readiness. We will use them in training, planning, and combat development. We have established a simulation test bed that is used for both training and development. Simulations will stretch the commander's ability to train, to plan and to employ forces.
- In the future we must ensure a family of simulations and simulators that replicate the blending of information and fires. We need the right mix of trainers, e.g. FSCATT, simulators and embedded trainers to fully tie the artillery into the STOW and DIS world.
- Soldiers must be able to train on their digital systems via real time two way interface with simulation. Our goal is a system that links information and fires creating a realistic expectation of what fires can do. We must also use the same system to help the combat developer.
- Simulations will be used to expand the range of alternatives evaluated during concept formulation, and an aid to planning and setting priorities. We must integrate modeling and simulations into test and evaluation process to secure early insight, reduce costs, and shorten acquisition cycle time.
- Challenges remain in areas of virtual reality, extant communications, linking simulations to real world exercises on live ranges, variable resolution of simulated entities and realistic semi-automated forces, and integration of real equipment into the simulation to ensure real time interactivity.
