Grenade, Discharger, Anti-Riot Irritant, XL96E1 &
Grenade, Discharger, Anti-Riot, Practice, XL97E1

The XL96E1 is an anti-riot grenade that dispenses CS gas. It is launched from 66 mm vehicle mounted dischargers in a 4 grenade salvo. Each XL96E1 contains 23 individual cannisters filled with CS compound, providing a number of CS sources, rather than a single plume. The XL97E1, a training version of the XL96E1, uses cinammic acid (CA) smoke to simulate CS.

Background/Status:

The XL96E1/XL97E1 program is a cooperative development with the United Kingdom. The grenades are improved versions of the L11A1 and the L14 grenades that are standard issue in the UK armed forces.
