Iranian President Rafsanjani announced on 11 October 1997 that Iran had test-launched a major new surface-to-air missile system with a range of 250 kilometers. Although no further details have been forthcoming, the description of the missile was generally similar to the Russian SA-5, which is deployed in Iran. Various reports suggest that Iran has acquired four HQ-23/2B (CSA-1) launchers and 45-48 missiles, along with 25 SA-6 and 10-15 SA-5 launchers.
