Navy News Service 04/99 (Jan. 20, 1999) NNS0408. USS Safeguard to be forward deployed in Sasebo by U.S. Naval Forces Japan Public Affairs SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- USS Safeguard (ARS 50), currently homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, will be forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan, beginning June 16 as part of a planned rotation of forward deployed naval forces. Safeguard is a rescue and salvage ship with a complement of seven officers and 103 enlisted personnel. It's primary mission is to provide salvage, repair diving, and rescue services to the fleet at sea as a unit of the Combat Logistics Support Force. The forward deployment of this modern rescue and salvage ship to the Seventh Fleet in Sasebo demonstrates continued U.S. commitment to the security of the Pacific Region and Japan. -USN-
