USS Narwhal scheduled for inactivation by COMSUBLANT Public Affairs NORFOLK (NNS) -- USS Narwhal (SSN 671) was honored Jan. 16 during inactivation ceremonies at Naval Station Norfolk. The nuclear-powered attack submarine was commissioned July 12, 1969, as a one-of-a-kind submarine equipped with numerous state-of-the-art advancements in sound silencing, nuclear propulsion and combat systems. During her career, Narwhal was highly decorated, receiving the Navy Unit Commendation, three Meritorious Unit Commendations and five Battle Efficiency "E" awards. She has conducted 17 deployments to all corners of the world. Most recently, during her 1998 deployment to the Mediterranean, Narwhal was underway 86 percent of the time, conducting numerous international exercises and two extended operations of vital importance to national security. After being homeported in New London, Conn. and Charleston, S.C., Narwhal moved to Hampton Roads in October 1994. She will begin the decommissioning process at Newport News Shipbuilding later this month. -USN-
