Navy News Service 45/99 (Sept. 30, 1999) NNS4506. USS Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group returns to Norfolk; USS Kennedy Battle Group deploys by COMSECONDFLT Public Affairs NORFOLK, VA (NNS) - Last week saw a flurry of activity at Naval Station Norfolk and other homeports along the East Coast as the Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group returned from a six-month operational cruise to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf, while the John F. Kennedy Battle Group departed for its routine deployment. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 21 and continuing through the week, aircraft and ships from the two battle groups returned to or departed from their homeports. The Roosevelt units began their deployment in March and were originally scheduled to return Friday, Sept. 24. Hurricane Gert's expected track forced the cancellation of a planned Tiger Cruise from Bermuda to Norfolk. As a result, they were able to pull in two days earlier than expected. Squadrons assigned to NAS Oceana and NAS Norfolk arrived on Sept. 21 with the ships returning home on Sept. 22. -USN- -USN-
