Chao Yang-class [Gearing] Destroyer

By the early 1990s the ROC Navy had more than a dozen older, World War II-era Gearing-class destroyers and numerous smaller combatants and auxiliaries in its operational inventory. Seven of the Gearing-class ships were converted into area air defence ships under the Wu Chin III program, receiving 10 box-launched Standard SM-1 surface-to-air missles and associated fire control systems. The remainder of these ships, of limited combat effectiveness, have been de-comissioned.

Construction	NOTE: Available open sources are in rather profound disagreement concerning the identity of the units of this class, and provide wildly variant correlations between number, name and former US Navy hull. The information provided here for the current Wu Chin III sub-class is probably reasonably accurate, but the information for the retired ships almost entirely speculative. While the total number of vessels is correct, and the ROC Navy names are for the most part generally correct, the ROC hull numbers and correlation with US Navy hulls is evidently defective, since there is considerable duplication between the relatively well attested Wu Chin III units and the units of the other sub-classes. No attempt is made here to resolve these discrepancies. • DESTROYER KAIYANG DECOMMISSIONED [CNA Taiwan] 16 November 1999 -- Kaiyang, originally a US navy destroyer, was commissioned in 1945.
• TWO ROC WARSHIPS DECOMMISSIONED Central News Agency [Taiwan] 13 August 1999 -- Two Republic of China warships were decommissioned on Monday after almost 30 years of service, bringing to 10 the total number of naval vessels decommissioned by the ROC.
