Project 1840
Lima class

The Project 1840 Lima-class consisted of a single experimental diesel-electric submarine. The exact purpose of this submarine remained obscure to Western observers, though it was generally asssessed as performing a research or special-mission role. The single unit of this class was was completed in 1979. Brought to St. Petersburg for overhaul in 1989 following Black Sea Fleet service, the work was never completed and she was abandoned.
