Washington -- The secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty

invitation of President Clinton.

Following is the text of the January 30 White House announcement:

President Clinton has invited NATO Secretary General Javier Solana to
Washington for a working visit on February 20. Secretary General
Solana has accepted the invitation. This will be his first official
visit to the United States since taking up his duties as Secretary
General on December 19.

The secretary general's visit comes at a crucial time in NATO's
history. NATO forces are in Bosnia implementing the Dayton peace
agreement at the same time as the Alliance is entering into a new
phase in the NATO enlargement process, deepening the Partnership for
Peace, and developing the NATO-Russia relationship. NATO is also
considering ways to further adapt the Alliance to the demands of the
post-Cold War world. President Clinton and Secretary General Solana
will discuss these and other issues and will reaffirm the critical
importance of the transatlantic relationship to the peace and security
of Europe and North America.
