The Combined Federal Campaign

cfc Federal employees, are you aware that the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is a member of the Combined Federal Campaign? You may donate to FAS directly through your Federal Agencies Workplace Campaign. The FAS campaign number is #11539.  This number is for Federal but not State Campaigns.

The following description will appear along with #11539 in the CFC Campaign brochure:  FAS: providing scientific analysis with integrity focused on influencing the policy debate on nuclear weapons and small arms, government secrecy, education and climate change.

What is the CFC? The CFC allows employees of the Federal Government (which includes postal service employees and military members) to donate to the charity of their choosing.  As the official CFC website decrees, "the mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all." Look for FAS in the CFC booklet handed out by your agency. Remember, our campaign number is #11539

If you would like, you can also give to FAS directly

The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) was founded in 1945 by scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project to develop the first atomic bombs. These scientists recognized that science had become central to many key public policy questions. They believed that scientists had a unique responsibility to both warn the public and policy leaders of potential dangers from scientific and technical advances and to show how good policy could increase the benefits of new scientific knowledge. Seventy Nobel Prize winners sit on our Board of Sponsors.

FAS works in three main project areas, and by donating directly to FAS, you can decide which project your money goes to.

FAS program areas include:

ssp Strategic Security Program:  The world confronts an array of complex security challenges, from microbes to potential nuclear war.  Meeting the threats we face in the twenty first century requires solid technical and scientific data and analyses.  The Strategic Security Program is dedicated to enhancing the security of the country and the world by applying its expertise to these important and urgent problems and making its results available to policy-makers, the press, and the public.

The Program strives to reduce the spread and risk of nuclear weapons, to stop the global illicit trade in conventional weapons, to promote the safe and responsible use of new biotechnology, and to advocate sensible attitudes toward access to government information, which is a prerequisite for any intelligent decision-making in a democracy.

ltp Learning Technologies Program: The Learning Technologies Program focuses on ways to use technology to improve how people teach and learn. Well-paid, rewarding jobs in the U.S. depend on a workforce prepared to operate in a fast-paced, technologically sophisticated global economy. Doing this in an affordable way for a highly diverse population demands new approaches. But progress in improving education and training has been slow. Advanced technologies have the potential to make learning more productive for students of all ages and all backgrounds and are an essential part of meeting the nation's education and training challenges.

bt Building Technologies Program: There is no serious doubt that human activity is altering the earth's climate in potentially catastrophic ways. Even skeptics are forced to admit that the risk is real and that prudence demands action if only as an insurance policy, the only serious debate is about how best to respond. Technological advances will allow people worldwide to enjoy improved living standards and amenities with dramatically reduced environmental harm. FAS is working to improve the natural environment with its projects on Building Technology and China Lands.
