1.S. WELCOMES ARGENTINE DECREE ON `SENSITIVE' EXPORTS

WASHINGTON -- The State Department said the United States welcomes the

decree of the Argentine government to control the export of "sensitive,"

weapon-related materials and technology.



"It is eloquent testimony to Argentina's commitment to the cause of stopping

the spread of weapons of mass destruction and their missile delivery

systems," said spokesman Margaret Tutwiler in a prepared statement issued

April 28.



"This decree is a model for other states to emulate and the United States

applauds the farsighted policies of President Menem and his government,"

Tutwiler said.



She noted that the decree is "comprehensive in scope," covering all

categories of sensitive exports -- including nuclear, missile, chemical,

and biological weapons related material, equipment and technology.  It also

places controls on "dual-use" equipment that could be used to support

nuclear-related activities.



The spokesman said Argentina has also acted with "bold vision" to:

-- construct with Brazil a bilateral arrangement to place both countries'

nuclear material and facilities under their mutual supervision, and



-- sign along with Brazil a comprehensive safeguards agreement with the

International Atomic Energy Agency.
