Belarus: Report Claims Uranium Sellers Arrested
Minsk, 17 January 2002
RFE/RL

State television reported that Belarus security services arrested six people allegedly trying to sell one and a half kilograms of uranium for $250,000.

The report last night said the arrests were made after a security services agent infiltrated the group pretending to be a buyer.

The report added that secret services believe the material came from a nuclear reactor, probably in neighbouring Ukraine, Russia, or Lithuania, as Belarus has no nuclear power plants.

No details on the identities or nationalities of those detained were provided. It was also not clear from the television report when the arrests were made.
