Following is an official excerpt from Christopher's photo op response to reporters on China: (begin excerpt) QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, speaking of promises made to the United States, about 18 months ago China promised to adhere to the missile technology control regime and stop selling missiles outside the country. Do you feel that they have in fact adhered to that regime, to their promises? SECRETARY CHRISTOPHER: Well, we have some reason for concern about this and we are inquiring very closely into that subject. We will be enforcing our statutes here against China as is other countries. I think that is as much as I am prepared about it to say at the present time John. Thank you very much. (end excerpt) PRC COMPLIANCE WITH MISSILE CONTROLS Following is text of posting of late May 26: (begin text) Q: Is it the U.S. view that the Chinese have kept their promise to comply with missile technology controls? A: We continue to monitor closely and carefully examine reports suggesting the Chinese are not abiding by their MTCR commitments. If the Admnistration concludes that China has engaged in improper transfers, it will not hesitage to take the action required under U.S. missile proliferation law. How many others have been released besides Xu Wenli? A: At every high-level meeting between Chinese and American officials we raise human rights cases. Xu Wenli's was one of a number of cases Assistant Secretary Lord raised during his visit to Beijing two weeks ago. Xu, a prominent Democracy Wall activist who served 12 years of a 15-sentence, is the only one who has been released since that time. (end text) NNNN
