VOA's David Gollust reports from New York. TEXT: The Clinton-Jiang meeting was their first in nearly a year and it came less than a day after the administration won a key procedural victory in its effort to win final Senate approval for permanent, normal U-S trade status for China. With reporters present at the start of the meeting at a New York hotel, Mr. Clinton said he was pleased with the progress of the legislation - already approved by the U-S House - but he said there is still some work to do. Some members of Congress oppose the bill because of China's human rights record, and Mr. Clinton said he intended to raise human rights concerns with Mr. Jiang. But he said, over the long run the market- opening bill will be good for the development of democracy and human rights in China and good for bilateral relations. He also said they would discuss his decision last week to put off deployment of a U-S ballistic missile defense system that China and Russia, among others, have strongly opposed.
