TRIED TO REASSURE ASIAN NATIONS ABOUT THEIR INTENTIONS:



TEXT:  A NORTH KOREAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN CRITICIZED WHAT 

HE DESCRIBED AS THE AMERICAN AND JAPANESE WILD DESIGN TO GAIN 

SUPREMACY OVER ASIA BY MILITARY MEANS.  HE SAYS IT POSES A GRAVE 

CHALLENGE AND GOES AGAINST THE TREND TOWARD PEACE AND DETENTE.



THE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN SAYS THE GUIDELINES, WHICH UPDATE 

THE U-S/JAPAN DEFENSE TREATY OF 1978, ARE A SCENARIO FOR 

AGGRESSIVE WAR AND NORTH KOREA IS A MAJOR TARGET OF ATTACK.  HE 

SAYS PYONGYANG IS COMPELLED TO TAKE SELF-DEFENSIVE MEASURES 

AGAINST THEM.



U-S DEFENSE SECRETARY WILLIAM COHEN SAYS THE GUIDELINES ARE AIMED

AT BETTER COORDINATION OF AMERICAN AND JAPANESE FORCES IN 

PEACEKEEPING, SEARCH-AND-RESCUE OPERATIONS AND REPELLING ATTACK 

AGAINST JAPAN:
