Washington -- Following is the text of the Department of State's

warning to U.S. citizens against travel to Iraq:

(Begin text)

June 25, 1997

The Department of State warns all U.S. citizens against travel to

Iraq. Conditions throughout the country remain unsettled and

dangerous, and U.S. passports are not valid for travel to, in or

through Iraq, unless they are validated by the Department of State.

The United States does not have diplomatic relations with Iraq. There

is no U.S. Embassy in Iraq, and the United States government cannot

provide normal consular protective services there to U.S. citizens.

U.S. government interests in Iraq are represented by the government of

Poland, which, as a protecting power, can provide only limited

emergency services to U.S. citizens. In addition, there is a U.S.

trade embargo which severely restricts financial and economic

activities with Iraq, including travel-related transactions.

No. 97-020

This extends the previous warning dated September 15, 1994, and is

issued without change following periodic review.
